Day 3 of our Sign Language Week posts, here's Luke teaching BSL to our Toddlers.
We like to start exposing the children to signing early in the Toddlers room, so that the they gain an understanding of why we learn it, and some basic words, before they move up preschool where it becomes more widely used in every day activities.
Our sign language book is always freely accessible to the room so that the little one's can practice whenever they like. 😊❤️
This week is Sign Language Week. It is celebrated every year in March to commemorate the first time British Sign Language (BSL) was acknowledged as a language in its own right by the UK Government on 18 March 2003.
Recognising this week is important for us at Monkey Puzzle Hartley Wintney, as we have children at our setting who communicate using BSL and it is therefore part of our every day life for the staff and children. The children in Squirrels and Owls room are taught BSL and practice it at every opportunity, such as communicating as a group and when learning songs.
To recognise this week, we will be posting daily videos and photos of our practitioners using BSL in songs, stories and common emotions. Jess kicks off our week of BSL videos with the 'Days of the Week' song. We sing this song with the Owls Room children using BSL every morning during registration.
It's amazing to see the children use BSL and it teaches them such an important message about inclusivity, ensuring all their friends can feel part of the group.
You can find out more about Sign Language Week, BSL as a language, and download some super resources from the SLW website here: www.signlanguageweek.org.uk
Two of our apprentices Paige and Kim did a piece for Monkey Puzzle HQ, talking about the nursery apprentice scheme, their experience, and why they started a career in Early Years. 🎬 👍🏻 ... See MoreSee Less
Do you have any unwanted gifts from Christmas or birthdays, or any unwanted items that you are looking to get rid of?
As we creep towards June and the Hartley Wintney Festival, we're collecting items such as these for our tombola and would appreciate any donations.
Just a couple of stipulations: - Any items must be unused and still in their original packaging. - No food items please, other than chocolates/wines/beers etc, and any of these items must be still in date. - No sharps or dangerous items.
Send us a pm and we can either pick up or arrange drop off.
On day 5, and the last of our Sign Language Week posts, Jess F signs a verse of Old McDonald using BSL.

Our Hedgehogs Room used World Book Day to inspire their activities. 📖❤
We've had messy food play outside with Goldilocks And The Three Bears 🐻, and playdoh inspired by The Tiger Who Came To Tea 🐯.
Books not only educate and entertain, they inspire creativity exploration and play.
